In the Mahabharata, Ekalavya was the son of Hiranyadhanu, the chief of Nishada. Ekalavya was the army General to King Jarasandha. His father Hiranyadhanu was the commander of the most powerful king of the era, Jarasandha.

Ekalavya did not give up on his resolute will to master archery. He was staying in the forest. Guru Dronacharyacharya was teaching the Kaurava and Pandavas. After they left the ashram, Ekalavya collected the mud on which Guru Dronacharyacharya walked, as a symbolic gesture of reverence for his Guru's knowledge and footsteps. Later he went into the forest and made a statue of Guru Dronacharyacharya under a big tree. He began a disciplined program of self-study over many years. He consider the statue as his guru, he practiced in front of it.

One day when Dronacharyacharya and his students were out into the forest, Arjuna saw his dog was unable to bark due to amazing arrows in and his mouth. This arrows construction was harmless to the dog but prevented the dog from barking. Dronacharyacharya was amazed but also distressed: as he had promised Arjuna that, he would make him the greatest archer in the world. Wondering the archery art, Dronacharyacharya and his students investigated, to Ekalavya. Upon seeing Dronacharyacharya, Ekalavya bowed to him.

Dronacharyacharya asked Ekalavya where he had learned archery. Ekalavya replied that he taught him. He showed Dronacharyacharya his statue while explaining what he had done. Dronacharyacharya asked Ekalavya to pay guru Dakshina, the fees. Ekalavya kept himself in front of Guru Dronacharyacharya. Dronacharyacharya knew Ekalavya in the future will work for Magadha which was the enemy of Hastinapur. Dronacharyacharya asked Ekalavya to cut off his right thumb as Guru Dakshina. Ekalavya cuts off the thumb and presents it as Guru Dakshina to Dronacharyacharya.

The Bhagavata Purana mentions that Ekalavya assisted Jarasandha, when he attacked Mathura, to take revenge for the death of Kansa. In this battle, Ekalavya was killed by Lord Krishna, because Krishna knew about the future war of Mahabharata and Ekalavya could become an obstacle.

Ekalavya's story inspires everyone, how one should be dedicated to the Guru and the knowledge. However, his end was very tragic, due to bad Karma.
